Heroines of Fantasy: Miss July

Wow, June went by fast and it’s time for our next Heroine of Fantasy in this 12-month series here on the blog. It’s also time we pay another tribute to a pop culture icon: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

buffy season 1Buffy Summers

Played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy Summers is one of the top kick-ass chicks of all time. In each generation there is a chosen one, a girl destined with the supernatural strength to slay vampires. Buffy, however, would prefer to be a normal teenager. After getting kicked out of her last high school for burning down the gym (it was vampires, I tell you!), she moves to Sunnydale to begin a new life. Unfortunately, her new high school is even worse than the last, as it sits on top of a Hellmouth.

Buffy tries her best to do normal things–try out for the cheerleading squad, make new friends, go clubbing. Alas, evil lurks around every corner. Her job description says she’s to slay vampires, but plenty of other nightly nasties come out of the woodwork for Buffy to deal with. And while she’s the one with superhuman strength and training, she’s also got some best buds, Xander and Willow, intent on helping her out.

Not only that, but she meets the dark, handsome, and mysteriously brooding Angel. Vampires aren’t supposed to have souls, but he does, and falling in love with the undead is a seriously bad idea. (Like, really bad when you get to Season Two.)

i stake youBuffy tries her best to balance school, friends, potential boyfriend of the night, and slaying evil. It’s not an easy gig. But she does it with some wicked fight moves and a lot of heart. And now I’m in the mood to rent the series…

Meet Buffy

This girl’s got spunk. She can tussle with the best of ‘em and still manage to look stylish doing so. She’s got an outfit for every occasion—vampire slayings, demon vanquishing, averting the apocalypse. Though, these activities have been known to get messy. Being a vampire slayer is not easy on the wardrobe. There was this one chiffon blouse, a gorgeous cream with frills at the neck…anyway, Buffy tangled with a big, badass vamp from a biker gang. We’re talking the complete black leather get-up, hulking shoulders stretching the seams, and sunglasses (yes, at night <eyeroll>). Not to worry, Buffy did a few back flips, a few kicks, gave him a lesson in fashion, and finally staked him through the heart. Except he sort of burst like a popped balloon, raining down bits of vampire dust on her clothes and hair. Tragically, the chiffon didn’t make it. That’s the sacrifice a heroine must make, however. So vamps beware, this girl’s got a horn and hairspray, and she’s not afraid to use them.

Now you tell me, what are some other fashion faux pas Buffy’s had to slay?  I look forward to reading your comments!

Vampire Smackdown #2

Welcome to Imagine That on Wednesdays!  I’m going to once again ask you to imagine two hot, sexy vamps going up against each other and vote for who you think would come out on top.  Since most of you shouted for Damon over Stefan in our last competition, I’m going to oblige.  But don’t think I’m going to make this easy for you.  I have to admit, I was surprised that Stefan Salvatore and Edward Cullen ended at a tie.  We’ll just have to agree with Alica McKenna Johnson’s assessment: “I see a pathetic slap fight they both break a nail cry and go get iced lattes.”  Sounds good to me.  Onward!

Damon Salvatore

When he firsts make his entrance on The Vampire Diaries, Damon comes across as a very evil vampire.  He has no qualms about killing, hypnotizing, and turning humans.  He torments his brother, and doesn’t even treat Elena very well, even though he’s attracted to her.  However, as the series progresses, Stefan and Elena seem to be a good influence on Damon.  He helps his brother out sometimes, even saves his life.  He cuts back on the villainous routine and has his moments of heroism.  Yup, the ladies love this bad boy, even if he’s not so bad sometimes.

So who will be the contender?  Someone with a similar backstory, of course.

Spike

He too, started out as an evil vampire, killing, rampaging, with the singular goal of killing Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Originally known as “William the Bloody,” he acquired the nickname Spike for his typical method of killing.  In season 4, he makes an uneasy alliance with Buffy after a government agency implants him with a microchip that prevents him from feeding on humans.  After that, it’s only a matter of time before he falls in love with Buffy, even going so far as to get his soul back.  Another bad boy turned hero.

So tell me, who would you vote for?  In a showdown between these two vamps, who comes out on top, Damon or Spike?
